General Power of Attorney
A general power of attorney is a legal document which authorizes a person, referred to as an agent, to act on the behalf of a person who created the power of attorney document. This document is drawn up in case the person cannot make decisions for him/herself. The general power of attorney can make a broad range of decisions including choices involving medical, legal, financial or business matters.
Healthcare Power of Attorney
This document designates an individual to make health care related decisions in the event the person is unable to make or communication decisions. A distinction between this and a living will is that the living will only allows the person to make decisions if they are permanently unconscious or terminally ill. The healthcare power of attorney can make decisions for the person even if they are not terminally ill, in a permanent vegetative state or other end-term conditions.
Specific Power of Attorney
A specific power of attorney gives the agent limited power. It narrows in what arenas the person can make decisions. For example, one could create a specific power of attorney to allow their wife to make medical decision while creating another power of attorney granting a business partner to create business-related decisions for them. The specific power of attorney allows one to allocate specific duties to different individuals.
