What You Need to Know About Getting a Duplicate Title
Who Can Get A Duplicate Title in Louisiana?
For the majority of car owners you will be able to get a Louisiana Replacement Title. But did you know that not everyone can request a duplicate title for a vehicle? Only certain people will qualify to get a duplicate title for a vehicle. A person must be one of the following to get a new title:
- Current registered owner of the vehicle.
- Someone with power of attorney over the current registered owner of the vehicle.
- A curator for the current registered owner if he/she is incapable of handling this transaction.
- A bankruptcy trustee.
- Lienholder for the vehicle (must be recorded). Without a record of the Lien, a lienholder will not have enough proof to get the duplicate title.
- A representative of a corporation that owns the vehicle.
What Should I Bring To Get A Copy of My Car Title?
Make sure when you come in to get the duplicate title you bring in a copy of your Louisiana registration certificate if you have it. If the vehicle has ever been financed or had a lien on it, it is very likely you will also need to bring in a lien release letter from the former finance company or lienholder, before the copy of your car title can be ordered. When the proper paperwork has been submitted by the right person, we can get the job done quickly. You will also need to prove your identity with your license. For most people to get a duplicate title, all you will need is:
- State ID or drivers license
- Copy of registration certificate
- Proof of insurance
Other Information or Paperwork You May Need
Most of us will also need additional information in order to get the duplicate title for a car. For example if you have Power of Attorney for a parent and need to sell their car but you can’t find the original title – in this case you will need to prove power of attorney for your parent. Other paperwork or information that may be required includes the following:
- Lien release letter – this is applicable if there is/was a Lien on your vehicle. Without the a release letter you will not be able to get a title.
- Car details including: License plate number, the vehicle’s VIN, make, model, and year.
- Power of attorney documentation – without this documentation you will not be able to get the title of a car you do not personally own, even if you are helping a loved one.
- Curator ad personam documentation – if you are the Curator ad personam for an individual, you will need paperwork that proves as such.
- Bankruptcy documentation – trustees for bankruptcy cases must prove their connection in order to get a duplicate title.
- Lien – if you are the active Lienholder you must be able to prove this with proper documentation.
- Company documentation – if the vehicle is owned by a company and not a person, many different people may be able to apply for a duplicate title. For all company owned vehicles please ensure that you contact one of our five Notary Shoppe locations in advance of your visit to ensure we are able to complete your service.
Why Do I Need My Car Title?
Your car title is a critical piece of documentation. It proves ownership of a vehicle. You don’t need your title in your car (if you are pulled over you need your license and registration, not title), but it should be safely stored at home or a safety deposit box if needed. Your car title is important not just to legally prove that you are the current owner of the car but it is important to have when selling your vehicle. You will not be able to legally sell your car in the state of Louisiana without having your car title and properly transferring that title to the new owner.
